Chiropractors share the belief that the spine and health are related in a fundamental way, and that this relationship is mediated through the nervous system. Chiropractic philosophy is about holism. Holism assumes that health is affected by everything in an individual's environment.
The key is the spine. The spine is the primary highway of your nervous system and the healthier the infrastructure that holds your nervous system the healthier you will be holistically.
Historically Chiropractic care can claim roots all the way back to the 16th century with techniques similar to bone-setting. In Japan, bone-setting is known as sekkotsu. In China, it is known as die-da, and is practiced by martial artists.
Today chiropractic care is still focused on the mechanics of joints and the alignment of the spine. When the spine is out of alignment chiropractors use a fancy word called subluxation. Vertebral subluxation can cause pinched nerves which then can cause a whole host of uncomfortable symptoms.
According to the national Board of Chiropractic Examiners, “"The specific focus of chiropractic practice is known as the chiropractic subluxation or joint dysfunction. A subluxation is a health concern that manifests in the skeletal joints, and, through complex anatomical and physiological relationships, affects the nervous system and may lead to reduced function, disability or illness.”
