Have you recently been in a car accident? While you might have initially felt fine, it is likely that a few hours or even a few days you'll start noticing a lingering soreness or stiffness. During a car accident whiplash is one of the most common injuries inflicted, especially if you were rear-ended or hit from behind. Whiplash occurs when the head experiences a sudden, jarring movement backward, forward or even to the side. Common symptoms of whiplash include neck pain, headaches, dizziness, shoulder pain and a reduced range of motion in the neck. Chiropractic care can be an essential part of properly healing from an auto injury! Learn more about a whiplash injury and treatment below.

Muscle Dysfunction from Whiplash Injuries

When joint dysfunction develops, muscles are affected. Some muscles respond by becoming tense and overactive, while others respond by becoming inhibited and underactive. In either case, these muscles can develop trigger points that may necessitate whiplash treatment involving muscle relaxation or stimulation.

Trigger points are areas of congestion within the muscle where toxins accumulate. These toxins can irritate the nerve endings within the muscle and produce pain. This whiplash pain can occur in the muscle itself or can be referred pain (perceived in other areas of the body).

The muscle can also send abnormal neurological signals into the nervous system, which can then cause disruption of the ability of the nervous system to properly regulate muscles in other parts of the body, leading to the development of faulty movement patterns.

Enjoy better health, higher energy, and enhanced performance through the benefits of spinal adjustments.

Thanks for helping me understand that a chiropractor will be able to make your recovery faster. Like you said, they will be treating your muscles and nerve damage that you have acquired during the incident. I will keep this in mind if ever I get into an accident in the future. I just needed to know about these things because I am a new driver since I just passed a month ago with my driving lesson. This will help me have an idea of what to do when I am in this kind of situation.

My son was recently in a car accident and is suffering a pretty painful case of whiplash. Thank you for sharing that the symptoms can extend to the shoulder and decrease the range of motion. I am hoping to take him to a chiropractor who has experience treating whiplash.
